A + P Shows, rodeos and other events

Event organisers

Organisers of events such as agricultural shows, rodeos and other events are required to:

  • Notify NAIT of the event date(s)
  • Register the location of the event with the NAIT organisation as an event location
  • Register the name of the event
  • Register the event organiser's name and contact details

An event organiser can register an event by phoning the NAIT contact centre on 0800 624 843.

Event organisers are not required to be registered with NAIT as a person in charge of animals, or to record the movements of animals to and from an event.

NAIT will provide event organisers with an event number to give to farmers to use when recording animal movements to and from the event.

Event participants

Event participants taking animals to events are considered to be people in charge of animals for NAIT purposes, and are required to record movements to and from events.

When recording a movement to an event, event participants are required to record the following information with NAIT:

  • the type of movement – this is ‘to/from an event’
  • record the ‘to’ and ‘from’ dates
  • select the event.

The event can be selected in the NAIT system by entering or selecting the event name, event NAIT number, or by the event organiser’s name.

Click here for a step-by-step guide on how to register an animal movement to and from an event.

If you sell animals at an event, then a movement must be recorded from your NAIT location to the event. Then a second movement needs to be recorded from the event to the person you sold the animals to.

School Pet days

Schools

Schools have no obligations under the NAIT Act. There are exemptions under the NAIT regulations for school pet days due to the small number of animals, short distances travelled and young age of animals involved.

Pet day participants

All animals that attend a school pet days must be:

  • tagged with a NAIT approved RFID ear tag and
  • registered with NAIT

There is no requirement for pet day participants to record animal movements to and from school pet days.
