Meat & Wool New Zealand is funded by livestock producers through levies on all beef, sheep and goats slaughtered and on all wool sold. This income is used primarily to increase preference for New Zealand wool and red meat internationally and domestically; to maintain and extend trade access for New Zealand wool and red meat; in funding research and development to provide solutions that will help improve New Zealand farm returns; and to provide wool technical advice. Meat & Wool New Zealand supports the enhancement of animal identification systems for cattle and deer, but notes that in the absence of any international market drivers there is no need for mandatory individual identification of sheep.
