Requirements for sale yards
Sale yards that handle cattle or deer have requirements under the NAIT scheme:
1. Register with NAIT
You must register with NAIT. Registering as an organisation lets you have a central administrator for your account, and is required if you want to be NAIT accredited.

2. Appoint a person in charge of animals (PICA)
You need to appoint a PICA at each sale yard location. This person is responsible for meeting NAIT requirements. You can choose whether to have one PICA for the whole sale yard location, or have a PICA for each stock company represented.
3. Report animal movements
The PICA at a sale yard is required to report information about animal movements to NAIT, within 48 hours. You must also report any deaths.
4. Ensure animals are tagged
The PICA must ensure all animals (except fallow deer) that come into the sale yard have a NAIT RFID tag.
Become NAIT accredited
Sale yards dealing with cattle or deer can apply to become NAIT accredited as an entity and/or an information provider. This allows you to carry out certain functions on behalf of a PICA.
