Requirements for businesses handling cattle and deer
Businesses that handle cattle or deer may have requirements under the NAIT scheme.
Registering with NAIT
If your business is responsible for animals at a fixed location (e.g. sale yards and meat processors) you must register with NAIT and get a NAIT number.
If you plan to apply for NAIT Accreditation you must register with NAIT as an organisation.
If your business runs 10 or more farms, you may choose to register with NAIT as an organisation.
Benefits of registering as an organisation include the ability to appoint an administrator to set up and maintain information about people in charge of animals (PICAs) on behalf of the organisation.
Stock transport businesses
Stock transport companies do not have any requirements under the NAIT scheme. They may choose to register with NAIT and apply for NAIT Accreditation. This allows them to handle some NAIT requirements on their customers' behalf.
Costs for businesses
Sale yards and meat processors are required to meet their own costs in relation to complying with the NAIT scheme. This includes:
- purchasing RFID reading equipment at each location they operate, and
- keeping software and systems up to date.
