Meat Processors

NAIT will be mandatory for cattle from 1 July 2012, and for deer from 1 March 2013.

Meat companies processing cattle and deer will have obligations under the NAIT scheme.

Your obligations

Register a Person In Charge of Animals (PICA)

When NAIT is mandatory, you will need to appoint a Person in Charge of Animals (PICA) at each of your processing plants. They will be responsible for meeting your NAIT obligations, and will likely be a plant manager.

They will submit data to the NAIT database either system-to-system or over the internet.

Register a plant location

You will need to register with NAIT each processing plant that you operate at.

Report movement and slaughter information

You will need to record all cattle and deer movements to and from your processing plant, and report basic slaughter information about each animal.

Become NAIT-accredited

Your organisation may also be interested in becoming NAIT-accredited

Being NAIT-accredited means that you can record animal movements on behalf of farmers sending livestock to your plant. Being NAIT-accredited will therefore allow you to offer an additional service to your customers.
